On Tuesday, October 24, the International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor will host a lecture by David North, chairman of the International Editorial Board of the World Socialist Web Site, to mark the centenary of the founding of the Left Opposition, led by Leon Trotsky in 1923. The event will be held at 7 p.m. at the Pendleton Room in the Michigan Union. David North has been active in the Trotskyist movement for over 50 years and has written and lectured widely on Marxist theory, the political legacy of Leon Trotsky, and the strategy of world socialism in the 21st century. The Left Opposition, from which the Fourth International emerged, was established in October 1923 in a struggle against the bureaucratic degeneration of the Soviet Union, the destruction of workers’ democracy, and the Stalinist regime’s repudiation of the socialist and internationalist principles upon which the October 1917 revolution had been based. The lessons of this struggle are not only of historical interest, but carry immense significance at a time of war, economic crisis and a new upsurge of militant class struggle. David North will address these themes in great depth on October 24, and we urge all WSWS readers who live in the area to attend. Invite your family, friends and co-workers, and share information about this event as widely as possible.
